Wreck at Hillside Junction

At 1:15am on February 21st 1975, train E101 with 12 empties derailed at the switch between number 2 track on the Potomac Subdivision and the line to Millersburg on the Mainline Subdivision.

6 cars were found to be on the ground, and the train had broken in two.   The Wreck train was dispatched from Berkeley Springs and consisted of WM 250 Ton crane 1674, as well as the WM Boom car, gondola, and an F7A.

The wreck train worked through the night to restore service, first clearing the number 1 track on the Potomac subdivision, then working to restore the mainline.

In this photo, shot just after sunrise, we see that 1674 has cleared the number 1 track on the Potomac subdivision, and is working on the entaglement.

Once the number 1 track was clear the log jam of traffic cut loose.  Here is the first northbound passing the wreck.  The train is under the direction of the wreck train foreman at this point.

It is necessary for the crane to stop and "streighten out" so that the adjacent track is not fouled.

The northbound exits the south portal of Stoner Mountain tunnel.
